The Short Answer
Concrete Cakes is a Philadelphia-based publication covering the intersection of art and entrepreneurship. We profile artists who think like entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs who create like artists, and the organizations, events, and resources that support both.
The Longer Answer
Philadelphia has always been a city of makers. From the craftspeople of its colonial workshops to the factory workers of its industrial era to the chefs, designers, developers, and artists who are rebuilding its neighborhoods today — this city makes things. It always has.
Concrete Cakes started in 2011 because there wasn't a platform telling that story well. The mainstream media covered business and arts separately, as if the two worlds didn't overlap — and in Philadelphia, they overlap constantly. The baker who's building a brand. The muralist who's running a business. The startup founder whose product is also a work of art.
That's what we cover. The people who refuse to choose.
Who We Are
Concrete Cakes was founded by Garron Gibbs in 2011. It's powered by a community of Philadelphia writers, photographers, and creative professionals who contribute their time because they believe this city's story deserves to be told.
The Name
"Nobody ever told us we couldn't have our cake and eat it too." Concrete — as in solid, real, built. Cakes — as in celebration, sweetness, the thing you make when you want to share something good. Also: concrete cakes are a thing in abstract art. We liked the collision.
